As the main HS2 terminus, Euston is being modernised to include the addition of ten new platforms, which will enable up to 18 trains an hour travelling north from London. Capacity at Euston will more than double, while freeing up space on the west coast mainline for more freight and local and long-distance services. The scheme also includes improvements to the urban realm and will integrate elements of the station with the surrounding communities.
As part of the project, Momentum is providing the following services:
- Detailed highway design: the services required – from inception to construction – to create, modify and regenerate public and private highway and urban realm infrastructure. This includes advising on phasing strategies and coordination with multiple design teams.
- Feasibility testing: assessing options to provide optimal arrangements during construction that are safe and efficient.
- Traffic management services: Liaising with local authorities and stakeholders to develop comprehensive and detailed traffic management plans. These plans facilitate strategic highway solutions to help reduce major disruptions in congested areas due to active construction sites, always addressing the necessary safety measures.
Derek Griffiths, director and engineering team lead at Momentum said: “The transformation of Euston is set to have many positive impacts, including the creation of new jobs and wider network improvements. We’re proud to be working with the Mace Dragados Joint Venture to help deliver this project.”

The new methodology will enable architects and designers to experience and feel designs from the user perspective, as part of a 3D environment – supporting them in creating designs which more effectively meet the needs of end users.
VR technology allows the designed environment to be experienced through an external avatar, being part of the environment, or one of the participants of the pedestrian simulation, and experience the design or the space through the simulated entities.
Specific pedestrian and people movement challenges supported by the methodology include:
Signage and wayfinding: identifying suitable locations for signs and assessing their visibility from the eye level of users in an operational environment.
Queue management: better understanding queues, evaluating queue design and assessing the queue management process.
Space utilisation and level of service: an enhanced understanding of service level standards experienced within sites during normal and emergency situations.
Kabil Kaliyamoorthi, associate director at Momentum Transport Consultancy said: “The new methodology that we have created with Mima provides architects and clients with a truly holistic view of their design and – crucially – a feel for how it will be used from multiple perspectives.
“Put simply it allows architects and designers to test their designs within a pedestrian simulation from the point of view of users, and to make design changes which suit the space utilisation pattern and level of service preferences. We anticipate the methodology will be used across multiple designs, sectors and developments, for example to experience major events and large crowds from the point of view of an event day steward who may need to manage crowd flow. By placing your viewpoint in several locations it is possible to optimise the positioning of your operating, security, commercial and event day teams to ensure maximum visibility and tactical locations; allowing them to effectively respond to crowding issues, safety concerns, wayfinding and emergency scenarios.
Phil Nutley, Head of Experience Design at Mima said: “The ability to be able to make technology more accessible and more human is fundamental in co-creating new experiences. By immersing a broader range of people in these technologies, with the industry knowledge and expertise, we can challenge the approach to the design and delivery of services and experiences, across many sectors.”

Momentum was the winner of the CIHT ‘Team of the Year’ 2021 award.
This award is aimed at celebrating the achievements of teams who have been able to adapt and work effectively under the challenges posed during COVID-19 in the Highways and Transportation sector. Entries to the award are welcome from the public, third, private and education sector and also from teams working across different organisations.
The award is judged on how well entries demonstrate the CIHT values of ‘professional’, ‘inclusive’, ‘collaborative’ and ‘progressive’.
Sarah Pryor, head of marketing at Momentum said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to win the Team of the Year award. This year has been a difficult one for so many people, and hearing such inspirational transport stories at the awards ceremony today – and then to have won our category – is a fantastic show of appreciation for the hard work of every member of our team.
“From hitting revised (Covid) business targets and helping clients succeed in their projects, to authoring research reports, winning awards, welcoming new people, closer collaboration between offices and looking after everyone’s wellbeing – we believe that ‘Team Momentum’ has really shown what successful teams can achieve together. Yet a defining Momentum moment in mid-2020, prompted by the killing of George Floyd, truly underlined for us what it means to be part of an inclusive, collaborative and progressive team. And how emotion and passion can have such an impact on how teams can excel in the professional world.”
