Ilford Gyratory
Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals
The Ilford Gyratory is a high-traffic, clockwise route located just to the west of Ilford Town Centre and south of Ilford Station. Whilst an important road for public transport, servicing and general traffic, the current operation of the gyratory creates severance and a barrier to the movement of pedestrians and cyclists. With access to Elizabeth Line services at Ilford Station imminent, and Town Centre transformation high on the political agenda, there is a pressing need to rebalance this car-dominated area in favour of a more attractive environment for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.
Momentum was commissioned by LB Redbridge to design highway layout options for the gyratory that facilitate removal of gyratory circulation, relocation of traffic away from the Town Centre, and creation of a transport interchange that will connect the new Elizabeth Line station to buses, cycle infrastructure and walking routes.
Our work has involved the development of concept and preliminary designs, traffic modelling, and transport studies to inform our proposals for the redesign of the gyratory.
Improved footway space, simpler and shorter pedestrian crossings and the provision of greening elements and places to sit will make walking safer, more attractive and comfortable.
In addition to this, our design proposals have included for the provision of fully segregated cycle facilities that will connect Ilford Station, the Town Centre and other existing and proposed cycle routes in the area, encouraging cycling as safe and sustainable transport mode.
At the start of every stage of the project, Momentum approached the different stakeholders to present the vision and objectives and identify the different stakeholder requirements and expectations. This early engagement from the outset of every phase proved to be essential to guide the direction of the scheme and manage stakeholder expectations during the project.
