Project context

Leeds Bradford International was looking to improve the dwell time seen by passengers in the retail units and seating areas in the international departure lounge.

Our work

Detailed passenger modelling improved the throughput process in the passenger security area and supported our client’s decision making concerning the optimal number and layout of mag and bag units. Our design solutions delivered additional search lane and additional queuing space for passengers, provided options for passenger segregation and improved passenger information and signage – resulting in an efficient usage of landside and airside passenger facilities.

Client outcomes

Momentum modelled the airport’s end-to-end passenger security operation to inform the investment in additional security capacity. This investment then contributed to a significantly-reduced average dwell time for passengers at the security terminals. An increase in passengers using the retail and lounge areas on the airside was recorded, providing commercial benefits to the airport.

Airports

“We focus on one user group, for which airports are built in the first place – passengers. Our design solutions for the terminal buildings prioritise passenger’s overall experience over everything else.”

Airports are the global hubs of the modern world, connecting people and businesses across continents in complex, multi-faceted facilities.

As flying for business and leisure have become commonplace, airports are becoming ever-busier, with a focus on smaller, regional airports alongside expanding mega-hubs. Changing technology and security needs create distinct operational requirements both in terms of the future needs of passengers and airport operators.

Momentum’s integrated team are working on the design and analysis of terminal layouts, operational strategies, and forecourt design and management. Our work is central to ensuring the efficient delivery of optimal passenger flow within airports; analysing and predicting end-to-end passenger movement at all phases of the journey from the forecourt right through to the departure gates.
