Introduction

Momentum supported architect BDP by providing transport planning services to inform and guide the Ballaghaderreen Town Public Realm Enhancement Project on behalf of Roscommon County Council (RCC).

The overall aim of the project was to create a pedestrian-focused culture in the town centre  increasing the town centre’s role as a central part of community life. Making the town centre more attractive encourages footfall which is  linked to increased spending. To achieve this, public realm improvements were proposed to provide a better balance between pedestrians and road space.

The key objective of the project was to create a more coherent and connected town, with improved public spaces and sustainable mobility, including improving pedestrian and cycle permeability.

Working closely with BDP, Momentum provided transport advice to improve connections between the town centre and its surroundings and transform the Market Square into an attractive destination for pedestrians. To inform our recommendations, we analysed traffic movements within the town centre, reviewed  available open data and collated examples of similar public realm projects in Ireland. We also produced a transport statement to support the project’s Part 8 planning application.
