Momentum Transport Consultancy worked with Birmingham City Football Club to help discharge conditions set by the Safety Advisory Group (SAG), to allow the local authority to issue a safety certificate for the Upper Tilton stand of its St Andrew’s Stadium.

The certificate enabled the club to reopen the stand following structural engineering sign off. The work was completed in the space of a few days to guarantee that all season ticket holders were able to attend the Championship fixture versus Derby County, as well as all games for the remainder of the season.

Following a meeting between the club and the SAG at the beginning of the week, Momentum carried out dynamic pedestrian modelling during the week to assess the safety and clearance times of several evacuation scenarios during remedial works to St. Andrews’ Kop and Tilton Stands. All scenarios and evacuation times were presented to the local authority and SAG before the safety certificate was issued.

The completed work enabled Birmingham City FC to provide additional safety information, which had been urgently requested by the local authority and SAG.  Without Momentum’s dynamic modelling work the club would have had to revert to a ballot format for the Friday night fixture.

Our work with stadiums around the world has two key objectives, to maximise each stadium’s earning potential and visitor experience. Our advice, analysis and services focus on achieving seamless movement for people and transport; improved safety in and around venues and decreased queuing times and crowding. We’re delighted to have brought this advice through for Birmingham City FC in support of both of these important goals.
