Consolidation of City Markets
Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals
Momentum Transport supported the City of London in the intentions to relocate three existing wholesale markets of Smithfield meat market, New Spitalfields produce market and Billingsgate fish market to a single consolidated site at the former Barking Reach Powers Station at Dagenham Dock.
Each market has a bespoke and complex profile and characteristics in its logistical operation and supplier/customer behaviour patterns.
Momentum set out an initial strategy to obtain information to understand how the existing markets operated, accommodated goods and where suppliers and customers were travelling as well as any combined trips to the markets.
We undertook analysis of various mitigation measures and sustainable logistics initiatives to develop an appropriate strategy to be assessed and secured through planning.
As part of the impact assessment and mitigation development, Momentum undertook capacity assessments of the local highway network. This assessment included microsimulation modelling of the area and the A13 to identify, develop and test infrastructure improvement works as well as operational strategies to enable the network to accommodate traffic associated with the new single market.
Momentum provided preliminary highway engineering designs of improvements to the highway network including works to Goresbrook Interchange to improve its connection with the A13 during peak periods.
Momentum produced a full suite of transport planning documents to support the planning application which successfully achieved approval at committee in March 2021.
