Caerphilly County Borough Council (CCBC) and Transport for Wales (TfW) have commissioned an exemplar interchange building at Caerphilly train and bus station. This is to support the electrification of the Core Valley Lines, which will deliver frequent, faster and high-quality electrified rail services. It is anticipated that a new interchange at Caerphilly could serve more than one million passengers annually. Additional bus services are also anticipated to serve the interchange in the future. The interchange will act as a new gateway for Caerphilly, improving the arrival and departure experience, for visitors, tourists and commuters. This is key to supporting the Caerphilly Town 2035 masterplan.

The Momentum team is supporting Grimshaw Architects in the redevelopment of Caerphilly bus and train station. The work includes developing static (using PTV MLSAT software) and dynamic (using Legion Spaceworks) models of the operation of the upgraded interchange, including normal operations (AM & PM peaks), special events and evacuation scenarios.

Momentum’s highway engineering team is supporting the redesign of the bus station, surrounding highway network and public realm, by providing design, swept path and standards advice to the architects. Significant liaison has been undertaken with stakeholders including bus companies and Transport for Wales to determine the operational requirements of the building. The project includes an increase in station capacity ahead of the Transport for Wales service improvement plans, the provision of a new concourse and overbridge, vertical circulation, consideration of ticket gates, and provision of enhanced station facilities including an active travel hub. Additionally, the project includes the improvement of the public realm in front of the station.
