Momentum was commissioned by Landsec to undertake a comprehensive pedestrian assessment for a commercial refurbishment scheme in the City of London.

Following extensive surveys and observations of pedestrian activity on site, Momentum developed a complex GIS model to create a digital replica of pedestrian movement around the site, and used advanced modelling algorithms to automatically distribute pedestrian flows from their origins to their destinations using a network of pedestrians paths.

The modelled flows were then used to calculate Pedestrian Comfort Level scores using the Transport for London guidance, by comparing the forecast pedestrian activity against the available space. This was carried out for a number of development scenarios in order to assess the impact of maintaining, relocating or removing a pedestrian route through the site in terms of forecast densities for pedestrians.

The analysis showed that removing the currently underused and unattractive through route on site would allow to activate the proposed upgraded public realm and ultimately provide a more welcoming pedestrian environment in this densely used area of London. Through a series of visually engaging cartography and key metrics, our work was then used to inform the overall feasibility study for the design of the refurbishment scheme; and to engage with stakeholders such as the City of London.

We also provided advice on transport requirements during the feasibility stage, including cycle parking and access arrangement, and loading bay and waste store options.
